Microsoft Security Essentials is a free anti-malware solution from Microsoft created for PC's running Windows 7 or Vista.
The Installation process is easy and fast. The only thing that is required is that you haven't any other antivirus software installed on your PC. Before completing the installation process, Microsoft Security Essentials offers to run an initial PC scan.
The overall installation time is around 4 minutes based on our test. Other, paid antivirus tools can complete this process in less than 60 seconds, but it is OK for a free program.
The software has four tabs at the top ( Home, Update, History and Settings ). The Home tab contains your security status and scan options, and you can run a Quick Scan, Full Scan, or Custom Scan. A link at the bottom of the pane lets you change the scheduled scan.
Update is where you manually get new virus definition files and program upgrades, History logs only detected threats, and Settings is where you go for advanced tweaking.
Security Essentials uses labels imported from OneCare: green for all good, yellow for warning, and red for an at-risk situation.
Scanning modes and configuration
There are three scanning modes available: "Quick" verifies only important system areas like Program Files and the Windows directory, "Full" runs a complete checkup on the computer, while "Custom" enables users to select the exact drives and directories to look into for malware (also possible via contextual scanning). Quick and full scan jobs can be scheduled to run on a regular basis.
When it comes to modifying scan settings, users may establish default actions for threat detections, depending on the alert level (low, medium, high, severe). The real-time protection module can be disabled, while custom files, folders, file types and processes can be excluded. Other scan options focus on archives, removable drives, system restore points and quarantined files. Furthermore, it is possible to inspect and keep or delete quarantined files.
Overall: Microsoft Security Essentials 64-bit has a very good virus detection ratio and generally uses low CPU and RAM.
